Definitions and Abbreviations
Patent Agent: a person who has passed the exam for registration to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office in patent matters, but does not have a law degree. This means Ms. Epstein can draft patent applications, prosecute patent applications (see below), and perform various related administrative tasks. She is not able to assist with licensing or litigation, but is happy to provide names of attorneys who can perform those services.
Patent Examiner: Patent examiners are skilled STEM professionals who work closely with entrepreneurs to process their patent applications and determine whether a patent can be granted.

Patent Prosecution: the process of, essentially, arguing with the patent office about which claims should be allowed and attending to filing formalities.
USPTO: The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is the federal agency under the Department of Commerce and is responsible for granting U.S. patents and registering trademarks.

PCT: The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) establishes a cost-effective means for companies and innovators to seek patent protection for inventions in multiple countries. Note that a PCT application will need to enter the national phase in each country in which the applicant wishes patent protection.

PCT Application National Phase: If you decide to continue pursuing protection for your invention at the end of the international phase, you must “enter the national phase” with your PCT application. During this phase, each national or regional Office will assess your application and decide whether to grant protection.
